please don't let me fade out
She was quite fond of the gardens nestled within the verdant and splendid castle that was Highgarden, nestled away in the rolling valleys and sylvan territory of the Reach. No other domain would compare to her home on the Rock, but Yuliya had pleasantly adjusted to the frequent trips and extensive stays whenever a visit to Carmine Tyrell was arranged. There was no particular reason for this respite but no one would ever hear a protest from the eldest secondborn Lannister when she was presented with the opportunity to find herself in the company of the rose prince. Her fondness for the man was not unknown by the realm but often equated to the gratitude she felt for the individual who had ushered her out from the hellish scepter that had been Maegor the Cruel's Red Keep. The ignorance was preferred by the Lionheart, who was content to clutch the bud of Carmine's blossom closely to her heart, kept out of the reach of greedy hands.

"You don't need to exhaust anymore time on me, Alerie. Really, I insist. You can return to tending to the other ladies; I'm content to make my way to the gardens on my own," Yuli firmly spoke to a familiar handmaid who had been assigned to tend to her. Her tone was breezy and the exchange was perpetual every stay in Highgarden. The princess afforded a debonair smile to the finicky woman before she gathered up her deep crimson skirts in her hands to give her an unobstructed gait towards the the northern section of the gardens. The air was slightly crisp but Yuliya was unbothered beneath the various layers of fabric and garments she wore. She would have preferred one of the plain, cotton dresses the handmaids wore but even a menial wardrobe alteration would stir up incessant chatter. Her eyes rolled instinctively at the vexing thought but the bubbling irritation was quelled when the blonde came upon her desired alcove of the pervasive gardens.

Much like the former interaction with Alerie, the nook of a terrace she chose to inhabit was a staple of every visit she conducted. It was an area densely populated with a plethora of pastel buds and leafy vines but a smaller patio that offered intimacy in a pleasant scenery. The wrought iron table and set of chairs were whimsical with their swirling vine design but largely uncomfortable to sit upon. Yuliya didn't mind since the view was breathtaking, providing a glimpse of nearly the entirety of Highgarden and the flora surrounding its walls. She ignored the chair, pulled out to easily seat herself, and lingered by a bush boasting powder blue florets. A hushed and tender voice broke through the serenity of the gardens, her finger tips brushing against the velvety petals of the flower, singing: "without falsehood; for my thoughts, my memories, my pleasures and my desires are perpetually of you; whom I cannot leave or even briefly forget."

There is no joy or pleasure, or any other good that one could feel or imagine, which does not seem to me worthless whenever your sweetness wants to sweeten my bitterness. Therefore I want to praise and adore and fear you, suffer everything, experience everything, endure everything more than I desire any reward.
Ask any sailor, any merchant, any noble in the world, where it was that was the best place to live in Westeros, and most would no doubt either choose to pick The Reach, or The Westerlands. All fruits, all grains, all farms, grew especially verdant with the touch of The Reach's soil. The Reach was rolling hills, cyan blue sky, wild roses and fertile grain rolling endlessly between rich, white walled cities. And Highgarden itself was the most fertile of all.

Between pure white walls, tall masonic towers, and struck with hits of vibrant green, Highgarden's mighty castle stood beside the Mander, and all roads across it rode endless vegetation, cleanly cut by industrious workers. The smell of soil and grass intermingled with the smell of flowers. Highgarden was decadent, certainly no Oldtown, but the beauty of its green land far surpassed any by the countryside.

But the heart of chivalry held a more sinister side. Beneath the sheet white walls, cut of marble and the beautiful flowers that surrounded Highgarden's plentiful wealth, was the great dance, where mistakes led to immeasurable loss and success granted victory like no other. This was all Carmine had ever known in his life, and even in the halls of his home, he found it hard to truly relax.

"Prince Carmine." Came the voice of a meek girl, Alerie Hunt. A younger lady-in-waiting, from a rather small house, who had been settling as the princesses' handmaid for the while that she was here, was escorted to his room accompanied by Carmine's personal steward. She curtsied, she showed respect, she played her part, "My apologies for the intrusion, Princess Yuliya has arrived."

Ruby eyes went from the canvas towards the girl. He had etched in the background, but missing a centerpiece. "Thank you Alerie." He replied, smiling gently to the nervous wreck of a girl. "I am assuming you're not sure what to do, as the princess has sent you away?" A meek nod returned from the otherwise rather forgettable girl. "That's alright, prepare her chambers for her, ask for help if needed, and you may take the rest of the day off. Where did she head to?" "I believe she went to the northernmost gardens my prince." A satisfied grin formed over Carmine's diamond features. "Thank you, I'll have the steward send you something extra for the trouble dear."

The sound of soft singing indicated to the prince where she was. Carmine's footsteps were soft, spider soft, so as to not distract from the vision that he saw before him. Plumed in brilliant red and gold, with blonde hair that reflected the light as if a mirror, emerald green eyes and soft, demure features, Princess Yuliya made most fall with nothing but a mere gaze. Perhaps that was what drew him in at first, but he knew that beneath that songbird voice, the gentle nature of her touch, and the rich velvelt and silk, jewel encrusted lace of her bodice, laid true strength.

As she continued to hum, Carmine's movements swiftly moved behind the young royal's, "A beautiful song." He whispered, into her ear, gently grasping her hand from behind. "But a very sad one, the one who sings it requires the healing of a lover to cure their ills." Carmine's lips pressed against the back of her neck, kissing her. He wrapped his hand around her waist, then pulled her hand towards her waist with his own. "So... have you found the sapphire that heals your suffering, and the ruby that brightens the heart?" He chuckled.

A lady was meant to entertain but were scarcely limited in the outlets of diversion they could pursue. It was a claim that might not have been entirely true, but to Yuliya Lannister she could be lulled into an eternal slumber when asked to fulfill activities that were deemed appropriate for a lady. Singing was one of the only acts she sincerely enjoyed enough to allow it to fill her leisure time or anticipated showcasing her skills when in the company of Carmine Tyrell. Many songs floated through her mind but she was partial to reciting the same melody, one Carmine had surely heard enough to memorize its lines as well. It passed through her lips naturally, a tale she was fond of and sung absently but still possessed an enthralling lilt whenever it was sung.

“There is no joy or pleasure, or any other good that one could feel or imagine which does not seem worthless whenever your sweetness wants to sweeten my bitterness,” she continued to croon, the words passing through her lips as easily as a breath would. She continued to drag her fingers across the bush, dancing daintily over each bud her tips softly caressed. Her voice was not extremely potent or entracing but it was pleasant enough for any pair of able ears to process and conclude she was a competent songstress. Plenty of nights had passed tucked away with Carmine, her mind uneasy and solace could only be sought from the use of her voice. The lyrical words would coat the pair, wrapping them in her sorrows and distress until they were welcomed into the oblivion of slumber.

Admittedly, Yuliya had become lost in the lilt of her own words and the familiarity of the words that entrenched her in their meaning. Typically, she was a woman of vigilance whose senses remained keen and sharp despite her settings or the atmosphere. The location of Highgarden and Carmine’s presence permeating the air granted her a seldom sensation of repose. The Tyrell’s nimble movements startled her slightly but his presence was confirmed once the tender whisper was placed delicately upon her ear. “Maybe that is the beauty of it, being so consumed by the the idea of another that they are the only one who can offer you remedy,” Yuliya proposed to him, the words heavy despite the fickleness of the statement.

His kiss extracted a fervency only Carmine could unleash, sending warmth surging throughout her body and her battered heart. She pressed her back against the prince’s, practically folding into him as she allowed him to support the entirety of her weary form. Instinctively, the Lannister’s fingers twined through the Tyrell’s and she squeeze his hand lightly. “The answer you seek depends on a number of factors, Prince Carmine,” she spoke, her words measured despite the sphere of comfort she had dove into with Carmine in her company. “To the realm, I am a grateful widow whose spirit can never be mended, let alone entertain the thought of love. To you and only you, my gem was discovered quite some time ago but there has been no fitting opportunity to voice my ownership of this precious jewel." A diverted smile settled upon her lips, the verdancy of her hues alight as she spoke to him.

Carmine adjusted his position, seating further back to allow for the weight of Yuliya's body to lean into his frame. "Mm... then the luck of that person would be dependent on if the person reciprocates." Carmine's ruby reds locked into emerald greens, he felt the soft fingers of Yuliya's slender hand drape against his, and he squeezed, stroking her thumb with his own.

There were no eyes to watch, he had made sure of that. Carmine wrapped his hands around her waist, holding her as if shielding her back, while simultaneously warming her. "I'm a fortunate man then, to be the sole jewel by which so consumes your entire being." Small laughter formed from his throats, unparted from his lips, bbut unlike his grand gestures and his wide bravado, it was sincere.

Adjusting her weight, Carmine slowly lifted the princess, so that she seated herself upon his lap. Carmine brushed the the curled folds of her dress straight, and locked blood reds to lime greens, closing the distance between their eyes, he nuzzled her cheek before brushing her lips with his, and locked firmly against her mouth. His arms tighted around her, vicing her bodice against his chest, before letting go.

"Are you worried?" He replied, a smile forming on his face. "You shouldn't be, but the fact that you are makes me happy. It won't be much longer, I am hoping." Carmine's eyes traced against her gold locks, a hand rose to brush her hair back into the right position. "I will write a letter to your father soon, kitten. There are no more obstacles now. When we marry, our Houses will join, and usher in a land of peace and plenty."

Carmine's hand gently played with a lock of her hair, "More importantly my love, how have you been? Are you still having the dreams?" He spoke more of her wounds, her nightmares of the past. It may not have been best to bring that up, especially in polite conversation, but he was not his political self, he was concerned for her wellbeing.

. She was eternally grateful for the solace Carmine offered her, even though it was a concern she had never actively voiced to the Tyrell. He was able to gauge her and respond accordingly from a mere glance, a connection Yuliya had feared she would never be able to forge after she had finally been freed from Maegor’s clutches. “Tell me then, Carmine Tyrell: are you enchanted by me or have I been terribly mistaken in my attempts at reading you?” she teasingly inquired, though the Lionheart was sincerely inquisitive about the answer he would provide.

The Lannister woman would genuinely miss their stolen moments of intimacy once the entire realm was told of their involvement with the other. The occasions she spent with Carmine Tyrell felt sacred, as if they were instances gifted to her directly from the Seven. They were feelings she was unsure she would ever be able to appropriately or accurately depict. Her head turned slightly, the side of her face pressing earnestly against his chest while he pulled her close. “I’d willingly hand over all of the Lannister gold to whoever demanded, if they swore I would never be able to see you again otherwise,” she murmured to the prince, her words startlingly candid.

She did have any protests or qualms with his desire to shift their current situation and place themselves at the elaborate patio furniture. Yuliya was compact enough to sit on his lap neatly, her mass of skirts and fabric adding more bulk than was true to her slim frame. Her stare remained attentive, a soft sigh passing through her lips when his cheek brushed against her own. Then their lips met in a surge of bliss, her mouth locked yearningly with Carmine’s. She nearly felt a pout settling onto her face when he surrendered his hold but contented herself with the close proximity they currently shared. “No more obstacles? When did your outlook gain a rose colored tint? House Targaryen is still claiming sovereignty yet the realm is divided. A marriage doesn’t seem to be the most pressing of matters, even though it’s all I wish for,” she exhaled slowly, her words devoid of the worry that caused her forehead to deeply crease.

The conversation then shifted to a topic she eternally dreaded: herself. Carmine’s hands mindlessly toyed with her hair but Yuliya went tense, even only for a moment. Five years had passed and her consort still hadn’t been entirely revealed to the scope of atrocities she experienced as the Gilded Bride. Leaning towards the blond, her forehead touched to his tenderly and the lioness’ eyes fluttered shut. “I doubt the night terrors will ever subside, but their impact is lessened when you are near,” she fervently whispered, the words sincere.

"I have." Carmine replied, he was not too fond of revealing his hand to people, but in this instance, what discomfort he had was overshadowed by her sincerity. It was not a habit of his to be too attached to people, keep them afar, never let them too close, lest they burn you. That was how he was raised, that was his entire life, but human faculties could only hold off for so long. "You've outfoxed the fox himself, princess. He's ensnared in your cage, now he is yours to tame."

Or perhaps it worked both ways. Carmine could only imagine what he felt like. Vulnerability did not suit him, not truly, far more comfortable was the feeling of holding things close to his chest. But with Yuliya it was different, her words however had a moment of shift. He was pleased to hear them, and he wished that would never occur simultaneously. "I will never put you in that position my love. You will never have another day without me when we marry." Carmine spoke, tracing a kiss to her jaw and neck, then to her ear. Gilgamesh gently directed her eyes over to the hills across th Reach. "All of this will be ours. Those hills, the roads, the fruits, I will take our children riding across those hills, just there, beyond the Mander."

Carmine pointed towards the rolling river across a plentiful wild garden. "They will grow in a land that does not know war. That is my dream." Carmine stated, smiling, "You and I, on the Mander, with... hmm," Carmine paused, "Six children. There will be twins, one boy and one girl. They will have your beautiful face and hair, and they will have my eyes. They'll have your strength and fortitude, and they will have my... Foxlike attributes." Perhaps that was not a wise thing to pass to his children. His smile faded slightly.

Carmine looked towards his wife as she spoke of the current state. "That is good, my love." Carmine replied, chuckling. "The current king is a vicious boy, he will not last long if all he has to offer is fear and dread. But a king who is afraid of everything is easier to control than one who grants control." Carmine paused, even though he lamented the loss of Jaehaerys, he imagined that the former king was far more perceptive. "Besides, now that we are divided, alliances are ore important than ever. And what is more important than gold, and food? When our houses join, we will be the strongest kingdom Westeros has ever known, not even dragons are eable to withstand the forces of hunger and poverty."

Carmine's worries for Yuliya's nightmares did not subside, but somewhere inside of him, he was glad that he was able to contribute to her safety in such a way, even if it meant that she had them. "Then we should work on something more permanent then." Carmine replied, "So that you won't feel afraid anymore."

Pausing for a moment, Carmine gently folded his hands behind her head, the delicately done hairstyle of Yuliya, quickly undone by a hand's removal of the ribbon that tied it together, letting her hair flow gently down her neck. Carmine brushed her hair, straightening the knots with his fingers. "I have a surprise for you." Carmine spoke, suddenly, his eyes lighting in relative eagerness. "Would you like to see what it is my love?"

She knew Carmine preferred to have an edge on those who he interacted with, regardless of their status as an ally or foe. Yuliya had observed such behavior during her time in the Red Keep. Somehow, she had been able to navigate through his sea of cunning to take hold of the heart he had attempted to remove from his chest. “I wouldn’t ever dream of keeping my fox trapped in a cage. He can run wild if he pleases, but I’m hoping the idea of domestication won’t drive him away from me,” she cooed lightly to him.

Carmine Tyrell captured her heart in the same manner she had taken his hostage. Such events had never been intended to occur but now she could imagine a life where the Prince of Roses was not an essential component of her functionability. She revealed the fractures in her composure to the aureate man, assuring him she had had only marginally recovered since her stint as Maegor’s young bride. “When, if, all of the potentiality I have heard a million times over,” Yuliya feebly protested his assurance of their marriage. She was hushed by his tender kisses, her citrine gaze staring out upon the lush landscape the Reach provided. “Riding? You’ll be old and worn by the time we have children. You won’t be able to match their pace,” the Lannister woman remarked with a breezy laugh.

She continued to survey the alluring verdancy of the Reach, picturing herself wandering through the densely packed garden Carmine drew to her attention. Lips pursed together in thought, she brooded over the seemingly unattainable the prince depicted. “Our children sound like exemplary nobility, everything and more that is expected from a child of a Great House. We only need to find ourselves in an era of peace before I bring life into this realm,” Yuli concluded to her paramour, her words solemn but a distant smile hung loosely on her face all the while.

Their conversation then stumbled along onto a matter Yuliya hedged about every time Carmine mentioned Vaelys Targaryen. It was not groundbreaking for anyone to perceive the Lannister’s hesitation to partake in a dialogue relating to the Targaryens and their unstable rule. She had been fond of the late king but his rule had concluded far earlier than the Lionheart would have preferred. “If any of the other nations are remotely perceptive, they will also reach such a realization. But it’s to my dread that I admit they may lack the necessary astuteness.” A grimace briefly overcame her features before it transformed into a tender smile. Yuli did not acknowledge the comment about her nightmares but remained grateful for the Tyrell’s presence.

His hands were removed from her hold and she remained still, presuming she knew what action would come next. The intricate braid done by her lady-in-waiting never sustained its beauty when in Carmine’s company. Instead, she truly became a lioness with her mane of gold wildly framing her face. Yuliya hummed softly under her breath as he began to work his fingers gently through her locks. “I’ve told you there is no need for surprises, Carmine. But I must admit, my intrigue has been piqued. Please, lead the way,” she concluded, waiting to be led along by her beloved.

Carmine laughed at her taunting joke. His fingers locked over hers. "You are worried I'll run away? That I don't wish to marry you?" Carmine spoke. "I am a manipulator, this much is true Yuliya, but I am not lying when I say I love you. And I know this for a fact because your comment hurts." Carmine spoke, a grimace forming on his face. Marriage was the ultimate declaration of love, when that occurs, a man whose strength was his looks and charm loses much of it in the tethers to that love.

It was a falsehood propagated for political purposes in Westeros, but ironically, Carmine truly did not wish to marry anyone out of politics. "I want them to be exemplary people, Yuliya." Carmine replied, his eyes staring into the distant patch of grass. "With enough human decency and morals to maintain their character, but be wise enough to understand the difficulties of life." Carmine's eyes trailed towards Yuliya. "In our lives are many traps. A lion is mighty but cannot avoid traps. A fox is cunning but cannot overbear might. Our children must be enough fox to avoid traps, and enough lion to terrify their foes."

And part of that foundation lies within their parents. Within their respective roles, and part of what Carmine must do.

"Perhaps my love." Carmine replied, "But that doesn't stop me from wanting to regardless. Unless of course, you are entirely against my predisposition to shower you with adoration." Carmine paused, perhaps that was the case, could a gift be too formal a thing to share with someone you held so close to you? Perhaps, but gifts need not be grand gestures. "Come then, let me show you."

Highgarden was vast, but it didn't take much time for the two to go to where they needed. The gardens were situatied beside the meadow, and that was where his surprise was. A pure white destrier, held by the stable master. "This is the fastest horse in our stables." Carmine explained, "A warrior needs a good riding partner." Though, Carmine thought himself suitable for the task, he was not too good at outrunning archers.

"Care to try the speed princess?" Carmine spoke, ushering Yuliya forward. Taking the reins of the horse, he gently pulled it towards her, "We can try for a run across the field, get accustomed to the difference between a soft palfrey and a true warhorse."

“My future and prosperity lies with you, Carmine. My love and essence will wither away if you abandon me; this much I know. It’s a fate I’ve accepted because I can no longer imagine myself without you by my side,” she spoke to him plainly, the words fervid and the look on her face genuine. Her fingers tightened their hold on the prince’s, talk of marriage and children dizzying her mind. “With you as their king father and me as their queen mother, our children will become the most promising hybrid of a fox and lion. I can imagine nothing more satisfying than the idea of raising competent and honorable children with you, my love.” The smile on her face was tender but propitious.

Ostentatious gifts were unnecessary in Carmine’s endeavor to portray his love for the Lionheart but she could not deny how satisfying it was to feel coveted. Her protests spoke true to her sentiments towards gifts but she would not actively require the prince to halt his endowments. “I was merely concerned of how frequent and grandiose gifts would appear to the rest of the realm,” she answered him, the words evidently bogus. It was further confirmed by the gleeful smile threatening to spread across her lips. Removed from his lap, their hands were begrudgingly untwined to begin their trek to wherever the surprise was located.

She fell into a blithe gait besides the prince, though they did not need to journey as far as Yuliya anticipated. A vast meadow of lush grass was located beside the gardens, where a breathtaking sight waited for her citrine hues to observe its presence. A soft gasp was expelled by the Lannister princess; her hand reached out to softly tug on the sleeve of Carmine’s doublet. “Absolutely divine,” she commented, hushed in tone. “Tell me, Prince Carmine: who is the warrior in this case?” Yuli taunted jovially.

The steed was directed towards her and she was pushed nearer to it. A brief instance of apprehension bloomed on her face, her eyes dropping down to glance between her hands. “I’d love to, truthfully. Though, I’m afraid the full range of motion and sensation never returned to my right hand. It’d be a sorry sight for you to behold if I climbed atop this beautiful mount,” Yuli breathed out, forlorn as she held out her left hand to stroke the destrier’s muzzle.

"A dangerous combination, but better dangerous that placid." Carmine admitted, thinking of that hybrid of children. Whether good or evil, what was more important was being able to maintain themselves in such a position with the ability to handle the task before them, ruling a strong kingdom, with enough guile and strength to maintain its borders. Carmine's ruby eyes twinkled at her grin, "Oh, the Realm will bicker and concern itself with itself. Your future husband is taken as a generous fool to the outside world, after all."

Carmine watched his wife's grasp and feelt her tug against his shirt. "Oh, princess, surely that's no way to speak to the man who gave you such a fine horse." Carmine tutted tauntingly, before reaching in and planting a kiss on her cheek. While he would love to show more affection, it was not appropriate, not when eyes were upon them. Hence, the reason why they were now going to ride away. "You are welcome." He replied, squeezing her shoulders.

"That's alright," Carmine spoke, a smile ever present. "Get up on it regardless my love, I'll take the reins, this horse is gentle, her steps are soft. You'll find that she will not canter like a monstrous tantrum of some of the rounseys the Westerlands produces."

“Placidity leads to an idle mind. I could never fathom the idea of bringing a complacent mind into this realm,” Yuliya agreed with him, her voice hushed due to the sensitivity of the the subject. Admittedly, the woman grew eager at the thought of a life where she and Prince Tyrell were able to raise children contentedly. Her own eyes shimmered with the Carmine’s; her fingers ached to take hold of him but there were prying eyes currently surrounding them. “But has the realm caught on to your status as my betrothed, Prince Carmine?”

The look on her face dropped briefly, the taunt direct towards her slicing through her composure. The Lionheart was not one easily shaken but she would crumble immediately at the hands of Carmine Tyrell. But then the resignation transformed into resolution with the chaste kiss pressed to her cheek. She gave the man a brief nod then turned her attention back towards the glistening mare. Whinnying softly, Yuli felt a broad smile begin to spread across her lips. “Forgive my lack of manners, something suddenly overcame. This mare is a beautiful creature that I am honored to call my own,” she rattled to him, sincere despite the stiffness of the easily recited show of gratitude.

A gentle bout of laughter then escaped the princess, her mood lightened by the his mere presence. She was blithe in her motion of mounting the steed, finding herself sat atop its saddle with no issue. Once he joined her, she loosely held onto the reins but allowed him the majority of the control. A ripple of gleeful laughter could be heard from Yuli when the mare broke out into a smooth canter. Wherever Carmine directed them, she was anticipating more intimacy to spend with him.
