Had the new Boy King dismissed their meeting? Esfyr supposed so. Well, her brother certainly thought it was over. Once she had given a polite gesture of farewell to the grieving Targaryens and their Grandmaester she was out of the door.

What had happened? Well. Of course, she knew what had happened - someone had poisoned the King for The Seven’s sake. She had just watched it unfold before her very eyes and yet the only thing quelling her utter horror at the sight was the entire incomprehensibility of it. There he had been, speaking his pledge upon her request. Now the boy was no more.

Now she had departed the room, the wish - the command - of the Targaryens, truly began to dawn upon her. Jon would not accompany her and their children away from the Red Keep, away from the madness. ‘We must do as he says’, she had told him. Yes - it was so, for the dragons’ claws had wrapped around each and every one of them; no Lord would be freed until the villain was discovered. A hard medicine to swallow, more bitter than the King’s poison…

...What was she to do, alone in The North, until the time came when her husband would return? Would the Targaryens imprison both he and Maceo? Lord Tully and Lady Arryn, whose horror and anguish had shaken the hall? Lady Tyrell who had called for the Maester? The wretched fiend who had caused this - was such a chaotic reaction their intention? She did not know. But she did know it was far too much to think about at once.

Her eyes flickered up through her lashes to the familiar face at the end of the corridor. Mustering a far plainer tone than her thoughts she acknowledged Maceo, “Lord Brother.” He looked to be waiting. Alone. Why? He should have been with Viviana, no? Or Lanceon? His out of turn actions during the meeting had only served to incriminated the Lannisters with suspicion. Perhaps more questions would be raised if he spoke with any of his children now.

After biting the inside of her lip, partly with nerves and partly in thought, Esfyr sighed and shook her head, addressing her brother once more, “A bloody mess. Though I expect you’re already thinking of how you might clean this up.”

491 words ★ for @Tala Stark ★ ((hope this is okay!!;;))

Two years had passed since her marriage, and Esfyr had long accepted that she was still very much only a Stark in name. It was not that she was purposefully distant, or that her family were so with her; no, far from it - she adored them all, and she was glad to be there in Winterfell with them. But she was still very much a Lady of the Westerlands, not of the North. She could not hunt - she had never learnt how to handle a crossbow. A sword or a javelin, perhaps, she would have a chance with, but even those weapons she had rarely gotten to touch, let alone handle. Such was her upbringing. Maceo had been raised as a Knight, for battle, to fight the King’s wars (as the wretched, wretched madman that once called himself King had so pleased), and she had been raised for strategy, for marriages that would benefit the Houses involved, and thus - as she had always hoped - the realms.

And then, the life of her first husband, the father of her children, had been claimed by the conflict. ‘What did I do wrong?’, she had asked herself, over and over until she’d found herself unable to sleep at night. Questions stacked upon more questions, like, what could have been done to prevent the conflict - what might have happened if the Targaryens had not sullied their reputation with such a foolish marriage, invoking the ire of the Faith Militants. Time passed and all of that seemed to have fluttered away like loosened pages of a book, disappearing from her mind and her worries to be replaced by the matters of the present.

But when dear Tala had returned to Winterfell, everything came flooding back, and all Esfyr could do was keep a hardened face and be an example of strength for her stepdaughter, because if she’d done anything else, the hounding memories might well have broken them both. Yet ever since, she wondered if she had been too distant. Yes, she was not the girl’s mother. But she was not supposed to brush away what anguish she must have been feeling, simply for her own peace of mind.

So she made her way to the stables early that morning, knowing Tala was to head out on a hunt that day, in hopes she might be able to converse with the girl away from the eyes and ears of the castle… If she’d let her, that was.

Though she wasn’t a hunter, Esfyr did love riding, and was fond of horses almost as much as she was of people. When she stepped into the stables (ignoring the offensive stench that she’d never managed to get used to, mind), she called to her stepdaughter before making her way to the enclosure of her favoured horse. “Tala, dear! Good morning! Are you setting off soon? I was hoping to ride with you - if you wouldn’t mind, of course.”

Previously, Esfyr was married to the Lord of a Lannister Vassal, Doran Serret, a man who died in the conflict between Maegor and the Faith Militants. When sent to Winterfell to marry Jon Stark, her children from this former marriage were brought along with her. Though it has been a few years, these children may still be living at Winterfell. They may have also returned to Casterly Rock, or live elsewhere as wards. Esfyr is very protective of her children, so if they're going to be apart from her, it will need to be with someone she is sure she can trust. That said, given the timescale of her first marriage, these children may be anywhere between 10 and 16. Any of the latter age may already have found themselves settled into a different home.

I imagine there to be two of them (with a third having passed away), but I'm happy to accept more, so long as their ages fit the timescale. They have taken their father's surname and belong to House Serret of Silverhill. Faceclaims as well are open, they don't necessarily have to be blond. Initially I left the options open and House Serret was chosen by Moth, who plays Elaina, and headcanons the house as having Dornish blood. I'm available on Discord or PM if any more information is wanted or needed but definitely talk to Moth as well if you're considering the secondborn slot, because House Serret is more or less her area now. 8D

about
Inquisitive and unusually - overbearingly - pleasant, Esfyr was born a Lannister but married into House Stark a few years ago. Her upbringing was a fairly sheltered one, as to be expected, yet she pried enough into business that was perhaps not her own to familiarise herself with the troubles of the realms. Losing her first husband to the conflict involving her birth House, the red veil she wore at the time as the symbol of her grief earned her the name of "The Crimson Widow", a loose and now somewhat redundant title.

family
Her family tree has grown a little complicated with her marriage to Jon Stark; she is stepmother to his children, but has brought her own children to Winterfell with her. Maceo is her elder brother, his children her nieces and nephews. Depending on who is married to who regarding both the Starks and Lannisters, it's very possible she has more people in her extensive family. She's very fond of those she considers her family, for the most part, and of course, is particularly protective of her own children.

friends & allies
Those that have positive relations with The North and The Westerlands can typically expect to be in Esfyr's good books. She's the talkative type, which can irritate some, particularly if they don't consider it her place to be speaking with them. But that will be their problem, not hers - in her opinion. Overall her position does make her quite a good ally to have on one's side; she doesn't have command of the armies of her Houses but can help with other matters, including economic (and sometimes underhand) ones.

enemies
A rare category, though there are still those that fall within it. Through Maegor's actions, Esfyr has a lingering bitterness towards the Targaryens, though she's also strongly against the Faith Militants. She'll deal with Targaryens for the sake of finding solutions to problems, and has some level of understanding that Maegor was a lone cruel individual, but will have little patience for any of those that would twist the Faith in such a horrific manner.

other
Typical interactions that could take place are those of the Great Houses as well as Vassal Houses. She's a rather open individual, tending to speak with anyone and everyone around her, which can also include the soldiers and servants around Winterfell. Recent happenings are what one will typically find themselves conversing with Esfyr about. And if she sees one's allegiance as particularly worthy of praise, expect to know about it - a Lannister always pays her debts, after all.

Personality:

The first impression Lady Esfyr Stark gives off is boldness, one that is perhaps contrary to her upbringing. Gregarious and inquisitive, she likes to keep on top of both her own Houses' business and those of the other realms. With a kindness that is unbecoming and perhaps even unnecessary, some may think of her as overbearing, meddlesome; easily troubled, she will often go out of her way to try to deal with problems, even if they are supposedly none of her concern. In this regard, she is somewhat restless. A calm and comfortable exterior is one she keeps as best as possible, from of many years of practice and refinement. Even so, her nervous tics can arise with this restraint; tensing her shoulders, clicking her nails, pacing back and forth in a seemingly aimless manner.

As a younger woman she was far less paranoid, carefree and almost hedonistic despite the circumstances of House Lannister. Though always carrying a cheerful disposition about her, the older she grew, the more this became a part of her guise and less of her true self. Losing her first husband and one of their children, the King's cruelty towards her brother and the rest of her family; each misfortune took its toll upon her. Her recent years have granted her a certain maturity, and were one to meet her for the first time, they may not believe her to have ever been as lively and naive as she once was. No longer does she trust as readily as the young Esfyr did, and she holds onto her bitterest grudges like vices. There is misery below her smile. Her concerns with the matters of the realms have pressed her to learn both vigilance and an underhand streak she wishes was not necessary, but finds it so. For no matter the ties of her marriage, she was born a Lannister - and the lion's claws are the sharpest of all creatures.

Background:

Lady Esfyr Lannister had been a wide-eyed and curious girl, once. Bright as the first star on the horizon at dusk, forever questioning those around her: "when?", "how?", "who?", and "why?" - the answers to which often kept from her, for they were not for the ears of a young Highborn Lady. The concerns of the realms were for her father and brothers to care for. She was no heir, and no son. Her place was away from the doors of power, away from the front lines of battle - behind castle walls, learning needlework, refinement and courtesies. Though her demure womens' work was not all - thankfully her insistence allowed her to learn to ride on horseback as her dear brother would. Into battle? Certainly not. But well enough that she could take pride in her skills. And whilst she couldn't ever dream of fighting a war with a sword in hand, there were other methods with which she chose to concern herself. She was raised to be a pawn in the political game enveloping the Kingdoms; a tool with which allegiances could be formed - or, indeed, broken.

But at first that seemed not to be. At eighteen, Esfyr was married to the Lord of a Lannister Vassal. Though very fond of her husband, a man renowned as a skilled soldier, their eight year long marriage was brought to an end during the turmoil of the Faith Militant Uprising, in which he lost his life, fighting on behalf of King Maegor I Targaryen. Stricken by grief, Esfyr became hermetic where she had once walked freely amongst the people of King's Landing, rarely seen by anyone but her family for the few years to come. When ever in the presence of other company, or stepping beyond the confines of the castle, she would wear her red mourning veil over her face - a symbol not just of her sorrow, but of her distaste of the conflict, earning her the loosely used name around the city of "The Crimson Widow". Maegor took hostage of her family at King's Landing; in doing so, he forced her brother, Maceo, serving at the time as a Knight, into slaughtering en masse. It was then that the recently widowed Esfyr fell into the true role she had been raised for. Securing a bond with The North, as well as ensuring his sister's safety, Maceo sent Esfyr and her children to Winterfell. There, she married Jon Stark, earning the title of Lady Stark and becoming the stepmother of his children.

Yes, she did not want to remarry, nor leave her brother and his family behind. But upon the chessboard, the pawn is the first piece to learn to play the game. Esfyr knew what was necessary. She removed her veil, keeping only the scarlet ribbon as a reminder of her troubles. Going forward, keeping ahold of whatever fragile peace remained is her intention - even if, perhaps, it means she must put aside her own grief.
